چکیده

Accent morphing aims to modify the accent of a speaker whilst maintaining speaker identity. A textindependent approach could be based on voice conversion systems which manipulate speaker identity through spectral mapping. However, it is not clear to what extent accent changes can be captured with spectral mapping alone. In this paper we implement and evaluate a text-dependent accent morphing system capable of manipulating both spectral and prosodic features. We show how accent morphing can significantly improve the intelligibility of English-accented Japanese sentences to native Japanese listeners (from 57% to 84% words correct). Analysis of the different processing conditions shows that much of the benefit of morphing comes from integrated changes to both spectrum and prosody. This suggests that text-independent morphing is unlikely to provide anything but a small increase in intelligibility.

Voice morphing and the manipulation of intra-speaker and cross-speaker phonetic variation to create foreign accent continua: a perceptual study

The STRAIGHT system of voice morphing was used to create voice continua of (Korean) accented Australian English, intended to simulate phonetic variation ranging from ‘heavily accented’ to ‘unaccented’ (native-like) Australian English, employing dimensions of intra-speaker and cross-speaker variation to yield a range of synthetic voices. These synthetic voices were evaluated against actual sampl...

The Role of Spectral Resolution in Foreign-Accented Speech Perception

Several studies have shown that diminished spectral resolution leads to poorer speech recognition in adverse listening conditions such as competing background noise or in cochlear implants. Although intelligibility is also reduced when the talker has a foreign accent, it is unknown how limited spectral resolution interacts with foreign-accent perception. It is hypothesized that limited spectral...

Comparing intelligibility of several non-native accent classes in noise

How does noise affect perception of foreign accented speech? English sentences spoken by non-native talkers with various language backgrounds were presented to native speakers. The Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) was found for 5 different accent classes, and contrasted with noise-free intelligibility. Modest trends towards global differences in intelligibility based on accent class were found,...

The perception of foreign-accented speech by cochlear implant users

The current study investigated the perception of foreign-accented speech by prelingually deaf, longterm cochlear implant (CI) users. CI and normalhearing (NH) listeners made judgements about the intelligibility of short sentences produced by native and non-native speakers of American English. While both CI and NH listeners rated foreign-accented sentences as less intelligible than native senten...

Perceptual Dimensions of Nonnative Speech

Foreign-accented speech has most commonly been characterized across three related, but independent dimensions: intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accent [6]. The present study applied an auditory free classification task, which has been used to test listeners’ perceptual representations of regional dialects [5] and different languages [3], to further investigate the salient perceptual dime...
